Artists in the STooPS family are connected to a range of resources ~ from being invited to ongoing performances, to receiving e-mail updates about performance opportunities, grants, affordable housing, and much more. STooPS was developed by and for artists, and we are proud of the community that sustains us. We invite you to learn more about the STooPS Artist experience!
The STooPS team invites Bed-Stuy community members to participate in our annual artist selection panel. These individuals range from institutional leaders to political affiliates to elders and neighbors. All selection panel participants provide their input using a point system based on application components including project description, community engagement, uniqueness of genre, and personal connection to Bed-Stuy. Additionally, the STooPS team considers age and experience along with any past relationship an applicant has had with STooPS.
The artist stipend for participating in STooPS is $50.
We guarantee stipends for up to three (3) collaborators. Collaborators must all be listed in your application. We do not provide stipends for additional performers.
Example: You and a choreographer collaborate for a dance performance that includes other dancers. Only you and that choreographer will receive a stipend.
Yes! This year, we’ve implemented a number of new support engagements for our artists based on feedback we’ve received.
During the Artists Orientation Webinar we will introduce you to STooPS peers and staff, group artists into small support circles, and provide information and tools for a successful STooPS experience. STooPS team members will also have designated office hours beginning in June to answer questions and support artists, especially those who may be new to developing community engaged work. One month before the event, we will host an Artist Development Workshop where artists can share where they are in their creative process and receive feedback on their work. As always, we welcome your feedback before, during, and after the event so that we can continue to better support our artists family.
All STooPS artists have the option to receive postcards to distribute to their friends and community. We can also provide suggested social media language for you to share. Once selected, you’ll begin to receive our community e-mail newsletter which you are welcome to forward to your folks. We LOVE it when artists help us spread the word!
If you choose to design and distribute your own promotional materials, we appreciate if you run them by our Marketing team first to be sure that it aligns with our visual identity and language. We can also provide you with our official logos and colors upon request.
Our matching process is generally random. In some cases, the homeowner or artist may have specific requests for reasons such as proximity, or familiarity. We accommodate this as best as we can.
You sure can! If you know a homeowner in our designated area, making that connection helps us organize the festival more quickly. While we cannot guarantee a pairing, we will do our best to honor your request.
We notify you as soon as possible. Based on the rhythms of our community, participants are usually notified who they are paired with 1-2 weeks before the festival.
Prior to the STooPS event, we host a Meet ‘n Greet gathering where artists and homeowners can connect. Once pairings are confirmed, we will also provide artists and homeowners with contact information to connect and discuss follow up questions as needed.
Each artist will have approximately four scheduled viewings. If you are a performance artist, these are the times your performance should take place. If your art is visual/non-performative, these will be times to engage audiences in conversations and/or activities around your art.

If your performance or installation requires electricity, we provide power strips and extension cords to connect to the homeowner’s generator/electricity source. Other than that, STooPS does not provide any technical equipment.
We also provides a sign which is displayed near the front of your STooPS location. It includes your name, a short description of you work, and your social media handles
Yes! Local businesses sponsors will be providing food for all STooPS participants. Food will be delivered to your STooP by a STooPS staff member during the event.
Sure! We do our best to leave space between scheduled viewings for artists to browse and experience the event. If you have props or equipment, it will be up to you make arrangements with your homeowner and/or others for your items to be monitored while you visit other stoops.
We prefer that artists are available for the full STooPS event. However, we are willing to consider extenuating circumstances in some cases. Your artist stipend will be adjusted for the number of viewings you can commit to.
Believe it or not, we’ve been lucky enough to have nothing more than light showers throughout the STooPS event in the past! Still, the STooPS team will select rain dates no later than April 1, 2017. In the event of expected downpour, #STooPS2017 will be moved to those dates. Any changes in the event date will be communicated to artists at least four (4) days prior to the scheduled event.
STooPS also keeps a few tarps on hand during the day of the event in case any unexpected showers come along.
However you want, you’re a part of our family now! Call, e-mail, sponsor, invite us to your shows and events, etc. Outside the annual STooPS event, we offer workshops and curation for other opportunities, so stay in touch. We want you to utilize us as a resource to navigate and support the community of Bed-Stuy.
Also, STooPS hosts a Reunion gathering about a month after the event where artists, homeowners, and sponsors can reconnect.
There sure are. Our STooPS team hosts artist-development workshops, and we’re often invited to curate for performances and gallery showings. As part of our STooPS family and network, you will be the first to know of these opportunities.
And as we say in our Values, STooPS is committed to tangible compensation for artists and organizers rooted in a communally determined value system. That means that we will do our best to negotiate payment, food, or some other exchange for every artistic opportunity we curate.
The annual STooPS event is made possible by public funds from the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, both administered in Kings County by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
